AI & Cybersecurity

We live in a digital world and now more than ever it’s important to make sure your company has the proper cybersecurity protection in place. One way to do this is by using artificial intelligence (AI), which has the ability to process vast amounts of data in a short period of time. AI is a revolutionary technology, that when used appropriately can help to keep your information safe.

  1. Reduce phishing attacks
Phishing attacks are one of the most common methods of hacking and AI can help reduce the volume attacks by identifying and blocking suspicious requests quickly before they reach critical systems. The goal of the attacker is to get a malicious program installed on your device or computer to access all of your data. They will look for ways to trick you into installing the malware yourself for this type of attack to work. AI understands human behaviour and can learn what a standard request looks like from a human and then detect when a request is not right and block it from going any further.
  2. Detect malware
Malware tries to sneak past firewalls and is a major issue for cybersecurity but with the help of AI you can monitor traffic patterns and understand normal behaviour. Traditional software systems cannot keep pace with the high number of new malware created each week; using AI to monitor can identify malware quickly before it reaches critical systems.
  3. Crisis management
In times of crisis, AI can provide fast detection and remediation of emerging threats with minimal human intervention. For example, an AI system could detect and stop an ongoing ransomware attack within 30 seconds or potentially identify cyberbullying on social media networks before they become an issue saving both time and money for the company. A false positive is likely when the human must review every post to find cyberbullying, but AI can process huge amounts of data and identify patterns much faster than a human. It can also be used as a pilot based on experience or as a pilot based on rules (e.g., “if X and Y then Z”). All of these scenarios allow for more personalized security solutions in a crisis situation.

With the rate at which cybercrime is growing, it is important for organizations to utilize all the resources they have to protect themselves from these threats. There are many benefits to AI, but it also has its challenges. Some of the challenges AI faces are machine learning bias, cybercrime, and machine learning ethics. It is important for organizations to understand the challenges that come with the implementation of AI to avoid these pitfalls. An important thing to remember is that AI is not a silver bullet for cybersecurity and is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Taking the time to develop these tools and identify the best way they should be used in your organization is a great way to start protecting your data.
